In 1932, Joe Mauldin was shot and killed by a trustee at Tucker Prison Farm in Arkansas. His attorney told the newspapers that Joe death was "cold-blooded murder," and that Joe was shot down like a rabbit in a thicket- unjustly and needlessly.Tucker Farm was run by trustees--many of whom were murderers. The state of Arkansas put in place a correctional system that would take the place of slavery. Tucker Prison Farm was self sufficient and made the state and wardens a lot of money off of the blood, sweat and tears of desperate men. Joe's son Johnnie vows to find the man who murdered Joe- and kill him, but that hunt is easier said than done. Joe's killer may have been notorious outlaw bank robber Lee Sitton, who had people protecting him- in and out of prison. Sitton hid out in the Buffalo and Cookson Hills with fellow outlaws Ed Lockhart, Frank Nash, Troy Love and possibly- Pretty Boy Floyd. That is- while he wasn't serving a term for murder.
